Top Five Ways to Get Rid of Black Mold

How do you get rid of black mold? While the chemical cleaners are often touted as the best way to do it, they are not necessarily the best or easiest, though they are certainly effective. Considering how stubborn black mold is, there are actually several ways to get rid of the mold in your home and keep it out for good. So, what are our top five ways to get rid of black mold today?

1. Chemical Cleaners:

Oh come on, we’re environmentally friendly sure, but sometimes all you can do is whip out the bottle. Still, not all cleaners are created equal, so make sure that you choose the right black mold cleaner for your home and for your comfort levels. Some Mold cleaners to consider:

-Mold Armor: It’s biodegradable, comes in a spray bottle, no scrubbing required and is affordable.

-Safe Shield: A slightly silly name, but it’s 100% organic and it prevents mold from coming back again for up to 24 months.

-Molderizer: a really goofy name, but it’s used in commercial mold removal and it’s perfect for really big jobs.

-Borax: the be-all, end-all of mold cleaners. It’s organic and easy to use, but it is toxic if swallowed, so be careful around small children and pets.

Make sure that the cleaning product you choose is environmentally friendly, safe to use around the home and of course, effective. If it can prevent mold from coming back for a while great, but keep in mind that the best way to keep mold from coming back is to eliminate the moisture in your home.

2. Vinegar

Vinegar is a safe, non-toxic way to get rid of black mold in your home. It leaves no odor behind and it’s safe to use near children and pets. Simply put your basic white vinegar in a spray bottle, spray the patch of black mold and leave it for one hour. When you come back, you can just wipe the now dead mold away. Vinegar can also be used for mold prevention by using it to clean areas where you worry that the spores may grow.

3. Baking Soda

In tandem with vinegar, we have baking soda. Baking soda can be used solely to get rid of black mold. Simply mix a quarter teaspoon of baking soda to a spray bottle of water and then spray down the mold and scrub it away. Vinegar and baking soda work well together because neither one can get rid of all species of black mold, but together they can get rid of all of them. Baking soda is safe, deodorizes and can even be used to prevent black mold from coming back again because it dries out the area. The big difference with baking soda is that you will have to spray the area twice; once to remove the black mold and once to kill any spores that survived the first wipe down.

4. Tea Tree Oil

Ok, here’s one that may have come out of left field at you, but it’s actually one of the most effective black mold killers of all. Tea tree oil is a natural antifungal; it is specifically able to go after mold! It’s also 100% organic, 100% safe to use around anyone and it is very effective. The one downside is that it is expensive to purchase, but it only takes a few drops to be effective.

5. Bleach

We don’t care much for the use of bleach, but there is no denying that it is very effective at not only killing mold, but keeping it from coming back. Bleach is best used on tiles and tubs or other non-porous substances. Be very careful when using bleach however because the fumes are toxic and it should not be used around children and pets. However, for getting rid of mold in laundry rooms or in the tub, it is undeniably effective.

What are some other black mold busters?

-Grapefruit seed Oil-like Tea tree oil, but no odor

-Detergent and water

-Hydrogen Peroxide

-Ammonia

And let’s not forget prevention: keep your home dry and keep the humidity levels low by using a good dehumidifier and cleaning up the damp as soon as you see it!

Get rid of black mold however you like, but make sure you get rid of it!
